The Power of New Hire Welcome Gifts

Elevate the Onboarding Experience with Gifting

Are you welcoming your new hires with a stack of paperwork to fill out? Read on to learn how to create a better first impression and make their onboarding experience more memorable.

A strong onboarding experience has a real impact on retention. Studies show that employees who experience effective onboarding are 69% more likely to stay with a company for at least three years, and organizations with strong onboarding can see up to 82% higher retention among new hires.

Essentials for a New Hire Welcome Kit

The most effective welcome kits are practical, high-quality, and thoughtfully reflect your company culture. When done well, they help new hires feel comfortable, included, and excited from day one. Here are a few key elements to consider:

  1. Branded items
Branded swag has its place, and onboarding is one of the best times to use it. It helps create an immediate sense of belonging and team identity. Focus on one or two premium items people will actually use and appreciate. For wearables, baseball caps are one of my go-to’s because they’re one size fits all and unisex. High-quality notebooks are another great choice, especially for new hires who will be taking notes during training sessions.

  2. Desk snacks
Small treats can make the first few days feel more welcoming and enjoyable. Simple, universally liked options include popcorn, candy, nuts, trail mix, or granola bars. It’s a small gesture, but it helps create a more comfortable and hospitable first impression.

  3. Something that reflects your company culture
Include an item that communicates what makes your organization unique. This could be a leadership or culture-focused book, a product your company creates, or something tied to internal traditions. For example, if your team regularly shares appreciation notes, a pad of Post-it notes can be a meaningful and practical nod to that habit.

Don’t forget the welcome note!
A pre-printed message from the President or CEO adds a polished, formal touch, but the most impactful gesture is often more personal: a handwritten note from the new hire’s manager. This simple effort helps establish a human connection early and goes a long way in making employees feel genuinely welcomed and appreciated from day one.

A welcome gift doesn’t need to be elaborate to be effective. Even small, thoughtful gestures can significantly influence how valued and excited a new employee feels when joining the team.
